Outdoor Advertising Guide for Indian Brands

7 min read · Updated 2026

Outdoor advertising, or OOH, covers every advertising format a person encounters outside their home — hoardings, transit branding, street furniture and cinema. This guide explains how the main formats differ and how to pick between them.

What outdoor advertising actually does well

Outdoor media is a reach and recall medium. It is very good at making a large audience aware that a brand exists, and at keeping that brand present in daily life. It is less suited to communicating detailed offers or long explanations.

The practical implication is that outdoor works best when the message is short and the campaign runs long enough for repeat exposure to build.

The main format families

Most outdoor plans are built from four groups of formats.

  • Large format — hoardings and cantilevers, used for scale and city presence
  • Transit — RTC bus stands, pillar boards, railway stations, trains and bus shelters, used for frequency and dwell time
  • Street furniture — pole kiosks, center medians, signal boards and lollipop boards, used for repetition along a route
  • Mobile and ambient — mobile vans, auto tops and look walkers, used to take a message into areas fixed media cannot cover

Choosing between them

Start from the objective, not the format. A launch that needs city-wide awareness in three weeks is a hoarding and cantilever plan. A local service that needs to be recognised in one neighbourhood is a pole kiosk and auto top plan.

Where budget allows, combining one large-format anchor with a high-frequency format usually outperforms spending everything on either alone.

Planning practicalities

Book earlier for festival and launch seasons, when premium sites are committed well in advance. Allow lead time for printing, mounting and, in the case of railway formats, approvals.
